The mud-brick walls once surrounded a thriving desert city that was a cultural and commercial hub. The city was designated as the country's capital in 1745, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become a united Saudi Arabia. Take a stroll through the old town to see the many ancient ruins, including the once-beautiful palace, houses, and market. Continue to Masmak Fort, located in Riyadh's old quarter and built in 1895 A.D. under the reign of Abdullah bin Rashid. After that, visit the Dirah Souq, a market known for colorful textiles ranging from silk to luxurious pashminas, before stopping for lunch. This afternoon, be guided through the National Museum, a national treasure and World Heritage Site comprised of eight galleries that tell the complete story of Arabian history, from the beginning of the universe to the present day. Continue to Murabba Palace, which King Abdul Aziz built in 1937. It was built as a family home using local materials and consists of several smaller palaces, service buildings, and the Royal Diwan. This morning, transfer to the airport for your northwest flight to Al-Ula. Spend the afternoon exploring the wonders of World Heritage Site Madain Saleh. The city, known as 'Al Hegra' in ancient times, was the southernmost settlement of the Nabatean kingdom and served as a stopover on a very prosperous trade route.
